Bulawayo City Council Explores Controversial Khami Dam Water Plan Amidst Mixed Reactions
Bulawayo City Council’s plans to draw water from Khami River has aroused mixed reactions from residents with others rebuking it while others support it.
This came out during water indaba held on 14 March at Bulawayo Club organised by Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA).
During the indaba one unidentified resident rebuked the plan citing sanitation issues and unhealthy activities done at Khami River.
She said, “People don’t understand Khami water because everyone dumps whatever he/she wants in that river and it can’t be safe for drinking.”
Purifying Water
“The water is not fit for human consumption because it is contaminated. People from Zion churches and Apostolic Sect use that river for cleansing their demons and other spiritual stuff,” she added.
On a contrary note, National University of Science and Technology Lecturer, Dr Lerato Nare supported the plan citing how technology can be used to purify water for drinking.
“I fully commit myself to say Khami water should be used. Any Engineer in this room can tell you technology is now available and will clean that water,” said Dr Nare.
He added, “You know Johannesburg is actually cleaning waste water back into the drinking system.”
In a side interview, Ward 3 Councillor Mxolisi Mahlangu said that the council will engage the residents regarding the Khami water plans.
Demands of Residents
Councillor Mahlangu said, “We always react to the requirements and demands of the residents because we are a pro-residents council.”
He added, “The issue of Khami water has always divided the community in terms of whether we purify it and use it as water worthy for consumption or it’s the water that needs to be purified and used for gardening and industrial purposes.”
The councillor stated Bulawayo City Council is conducting a feasibility study to determine if recycled Khami Dam water can be safely used for drinking due to the city’s critical water situation and it will come back to the community after.
