Urban Futures Project Cultivates Sustainable Food Systems & Youth Led Innovation
The Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association (BVTA) in partnership with Hivos, Botnar Foundation, and Green Governance Zimbabwe Trust (GGZT) has launched a five-year Urban Futures Project aimed at creating sustainable youth-led green enterprises and changing mindsets to build resilient food systems in Bulawayo.
During the launch, BVTA Executive Director Michael Ndiweni stated, “We are creating sustainable youth-led green enterprises, jobs and changing mindsets that create new inclusive narratives and resilient food systems in Bulawayo.”
Sustainable Transit
This project aims to complement Government efforts in ensuring that the urban community participates in sustainable transit urban agriculture.
The Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development is also supportive of the project.
Chief Director, Leonard Munamati expressed, “As the ministry, we are open to working with city councils in both Mutare and Bulawayo in ensuring that their dreams for this programme come true.”
Youths Inclusion
The government has recently implemented the Pfumvudza/Intwasa conservation agriculture practice to support farmers, with a focus on including young farmers.
The Urban Futures Project will support youths in employing innovative farming methods such as hydroponics, aquaculture, mushroom production, and green housing farming. This initiative is seen as an opportunity for youths to come up with new innovations in food production, preservation, and value addition.
Innovation is Key
“Innovation is key in transforming our food systems, this is an opportunity for youths to come up with new innovations in food production, preservation, and value addition,” concluded Munamati.
The Urban Futures Project is set to have a significant impact on the urban agriculture sector in Bulawayo, providing opportunities for young people to engage in sustainable farming practices and contribute to building a more resilient food system in the city.
