Fast-forward to today, and Monica is a 22-year-old fashion designer with big dreams in Zimbabwe. She graduated in 2020 with Target Centre and is ready to take on the fashion world with her own unique style.
Monica F. James is a fashion designer based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. She is a young entrepreneur who is making a name for herself in the fashion industry. Her passion for fashion started at a young age, and now she is introducing new and unique designs to the industry. Her clothing company, Fabrique Monique, was named after Monica Faina.
Passion for Fashion
She said, “I was inspired by passion for fashion designing and I am here to change the game and introduce something new to the Fashion industry,” She said.
She added,”I am always inspired to add my ideas or different flavor on certain designs so that they become something new to the people.”
Monica believes in adding her own ideas and flavors to designs, which makes them stand out. Monica’s designs draw inspiration from both traditional African styles and modern Western fashion.
Rich Textures
Moreover, she is particularly interested in using bright colors, bold patterns, and rich textures to create designs that are both eye-catching and sophisticated. Her creativity and neatness are what set her apart in the industry. She uses social media and pays attention to the streets to get inspiration for her designs.
The production pace is the biggest challenge for Monica, as the textures of materials differ from one another. However, she chooses quality materials from fabric shops when making her designs, ensuring that the end product is of high quality.
High Standards
Monica is passionate about the fashion industry and believes that setting high standards for oneself is crucial. She encourages other young entrepreneurs to put their hearts and dedication into the industry, as there is a big opportunity to go far.
One of Monica’s most memorable projects was working with the Bulawayo Vendors and Trade Associations (BVTA). They were supportive and encouraging to young, upcoming entrepreneurs like Monica.
When it comes to meeting deadlines, Monica takes her work seriously and does not like disappointments. As long as there is an agreement between her and the customer, she ensures that she meets her deadlines accordingly.
Ethical Standards
She also hopes to use her position in the fashion industry to promote sustainability and ethical practices in the production of clothing. She believes that fashion can be a force for good in the world, both by creating beauty and by promoting responsible and ethical production practices.
Of course, Monica knows that achieving her dreams won’t be easy. The fashion industry is notoriously challenging, and Zimbabwe’s fashion scene is still relatively small and competitive.
