Becoming Own Boss: Maculwamahle Ndhlovu’s Journey to Success
People often believe hard work helps them fulfill their dreams. This is a story of Maculwamahle Ndhlovu, a Gwabalanda-based unique entrepreneur, who started her journey to becoming her own boss in November 2020 with her clothing and beauty company, Vibes Clothing.
Starting in November 2020, Ndhlovu took a leap of faith and began her journey to becoming her own boss.
“I wanted to be my own boss and I needed fast cash,” Ndhlovu explained. “I love helping people feel their best, so the beauty industry was a natural fit for me.”
Starting her clothing business, Vibes Clothing, was no easy task. Ndhlovu spent a lot of time finding her audience and creating a marketing plan. However, her hard work paid off, and she soon found a loyal following for her brand. Eventually, Ndhlovu also added Avon products to her inventory after being introduced to them by a friend.
Business Challenges
But starting a business comes with its own set of challenges, and Ndhlovu faced some obstacles along the way. “Sometimes people place orders, then when it’s time to pay, they say they don’t have the money or need to use it somewhere else,” she said. “Lack of support was also an issue.”
To overcome these challenges, Ndhlovu became more proactive in requiring upfront payments and focused on providing excellent customer service. “Being honest and friendly, and creating a unique selling proposition have also helped me stand out from others in the market,” she added.
Like any successful business owner, Ndhlovu focuses on marketing and promoting her products. “Social media advertising is my go-to strategy,” she said. “I have found that social media marketing has been the most successful for me.” She also offers new customers discounts and promotions to incentivize them to try her products.

Ndhlovu’s vision and long-term goals for Vibes Clothing include becoming her own boss and buying her first house. To achieve her goals, she plans to increase her social following and test new ideas. “Knowing my customers is also essential,” she added.
Managing time between running her business and other responsibilities can be a challenge, but Ndhlovu emphasized the importance of sticking to a daily schedule and tackling the most difficult tasks first. “Prioritizing and setting boundaries is key,” she said.
Advice for the Youths
For those considering starting their own business, Ndhlovu advises having passion for the project and writing a business plan. “Having a plan will keep you focused,” she said.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many businesses, but Ndhlovu started her business after the pandemic began. She focused on creating strong community bonds and keeping money within the community.
Ndhlovu’s story is a prime example of the power of entrepreneurship and the impact it can have on a community. By supporting local businesses like Vibes Clothing, residents of Bulawayo can help create a thriving local economy and empower others to pursue their dreams.
As Ndhlovu herself says, “I am because you are and you are because I am.”
