Brintz: A Musician Transforming Bulawayo Through Aspirational Lyrics
By giving voice to his community, Brilliant Delani, known by his stage name Brintz inspires positive change through his music. In the bustling suburb of Bulawayo, one artist is using his music to reimagine and uplift his community. Brintz is a talented rapper whose lyrics address social issues while offering a redemptive element that encourages listeners to strive for a better future.
Growing Pains
Growing up as a socially shy child, music became Brintz’s outlet for self-expression. His love for kwaito music, influenced by the culture and his uncles who would bring the music home during holidays, eventually led him to embrace hip-hop during high school. Together with his friends, Brintz formed a rap crew, using their music to spread meaningful messages.
Furthermore, Brintz’s art is deeply rooted in his passion for community development and his desire to help people see their suburb in a more positive light. His music reflects aspirations for a better future, addressing social ills while also emphasizing the importance of working towards improving immediate circumstances.
Life Experiences
Moreover by addressing issues he observes in his surroundings is a priority for Brintz. He aims to inspire the next generation of leaders and community changemakers.
He wants them to be aware of their environment and recognize their innate gifts, using them to bring about meaningful change. Brintz’s well-developed and thought-provoking lyrical themes entertain listeners while leaving them with something to ponder long after the music stops playing.
Brintz’s songwriting process varies, sometimes taking months to write, while other times a song can be completed in minutes.
Additional, when inspired by something he sees, feels, or experiences, Brintz takes notes either mentally or in his phone, further developing the ideas and finding an instrumental that complements the mood and vibe of the theme.
His conversational delivery and slowed down flow pattern allow listeners to truly understand and grasp the messages he shares.
Censorship
However, like many artists who challenge the status quo, Brintz faces challenges in reaching a wider audience due to censorship.
The political nature of his lyrics sometimes prevents his music from being playlisted on certain channels and platforms. To counteract this, Brintz utilizes independent distribution channels, seeking to reach as many people as possible with the resources available to him.
Soundtrack for Life
As an artist, Brintz believes his role is to provide the soundtrack to people’s lives, capturing the mood of the times and using music as a spark to inspire and effect positive change.
He firmly stands by his truth and encourages other artists to do the same. Brintz asserts that no one has the right to dictate how artists should express their perspectives through their music, as every individual’s lived experiences differ, influencing their unique perspectives.
Growing up in a good, functional Christian home, Brintz initially believed his journey in life would steer towards academia. As an academically gifted child, he aspired to become a pilot.
However, as time passed, the music bug bit him, and his passion for music led him down a different path. Brintz wholeheartedly embraces his journey as a musician and cherishes the opportunity to make a positive impact through his music.
For the Community
Today, Brintz continues to compose music that resonates with his community, offering words of hope and encouragement in the midst of social challenges. As he remains steadfast in his commitment to community development and positive change, Brintz’s music serves as a powerful force for transforming townships and inspiring individuals to reach their full potential.
Lastly, Brintz was nominated for a Roil Bulawayo Arts Award after he released Phezulu as his first single in 2023. Phezulu, which translates to “Up” in Brintz’s native Ndebele language, is a tribute to everyone who is succeeding in their chosen profession or interest. The conversational, relaxed words go well with the tempo and serve as a springboard for some of the song’s best lyrical moments.
