Zimbabwe’s Tourism Sector Sees Improvement in Q2 2023
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) reported significant improvement in the tourism sector, increasing fleet utilization during the Second Quarter of the year.
The improvement was driven by the inflow of tourists during events such as the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) and First Lady Amai’s Traditional Regional Cookout competition.
Improving Tourism Sector
According to a recent report presented at a Provincial Development Committee meeting held on Monday, the Second Republic has significantly improved the country’s tourism sector in the past five years. There were 4,698 fleet hires during the second quarter, up from 4,290 recorded in the same period last year.
“ZTA and other tourism stakeholders have made significant efforts to improve the country’s tourism sector, which is reflected in the increase in fleet utilization. We have seen an influx of tourists into the region due to events such as ZITF and Amai’s Traditional Regional Cookout competition, and the joint marketing efforts of the region,” said a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.
The Sectors Recovery
In comparison to the same period last year, Matopo National Park saw an increase in visits, going from 7 808 to 11 141. By 2025, Zimbabwe wants to have a $5 billion tourism industry, and the sector’s recovery has prepared the stage for this. There were 10,961 visits to Hillside Dams, 5,075 at Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage, 3,109 at Blue Hills Camp, 2,218 at the National Art Gallery, 1,110 at Tshabalala Game Sanctuary, and 829 at Matopos Dam.
The Bulawayo Regional office has also embarked on regular facility inspections to ensure maximum contribution by the tourism sector towards a US$5-billion-dollar economy by 2030. During the second quarter, the office enforced a total of 50 renewals and three new registrations, the report noted.
Boosting Tourism
The government has also implemented measures to boost tourism, such as visa exemptions for several countries and the construction of new hotels. These efforts have helped to attract more visitors to the country.
With the improvements in the tourism sector, Zimbabwe is well on its way to achieving its goal of becoming a US$5-billion-dollar economy by 2030. The government will continue to work with stakeholders to improve the sector further.
