Bulawayo Gripped by Alarming Rise in Suicide Cases: A Concerning Trend
The city of Bulawayo is grappling with a disturbing surge in suicide cases, raising concerns about the escalating trend. In a shocking turn of events, five suspected suicides by hanging were reported in a single week, leaving the community reeling.
Acting Bulawayo Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incidents and expressed deep apprehension over the growing number of suicides in the city. According to Msebele five cases of suicide by hanging have been reported recently. The victims have been identified as Micheal Gonye (28) Bongani Mahlobo (40), Angela Ncube (17), Simon Dube (56) and an unidentified male adult.
Furthermore, Assistant Inspector Msebele in a statement, Msebele said, “The increasing number of suicide cases is alarming and deeply troubling for us as law enforcement officers and for the community as a whole. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends affected by these tragedies.”
Found Hanging
In the first incident, a male adult was discovered hanging from a tree in a bushy area near Woza Woza Shopping Centre. The body was found in a decomposed state, indicating that the deceased had been there for some time.
In the second incident, Michael Gonye was found hanging from the roof truss of his room. His father, who had left him at home, made the shocking discovery. The third incident involved the father of a recently released inmate who returned home to find his son hanging from the roof truss.
Moreover, the third incident involves a Simon Dube who allegedly committed suicide after killing his wife Cecelia Lunga. In a separate incident, a 17-year-old girl allegedly took her own life following an altercation with her Botswana-based mother. Angela Ncube reportedly had a fallout with her mother after disciplinary actions were taken against her younger sister. The details surrounding this tragedy serve as a stark reminder of the immense emotional turmoil that can lead young people to such devastating choices.
In response to these incidents Msebele said, “We encourage members of the public to share their problems with their relatives, church elders and other people whom they trust than to resort to taking their own lives.”
Seeking Counciling & Support
Additionally, she stressed the importance of seeking counseling and support when faced with difficulties, rather than resorting to such extreme measures. Msebele emphasized, “We encourage members of the public to reach out to their trusted relatives, church elders, or other individuals whom they trust. It is crucial to share problems and seek help rather than taking one’s own life.”
Lastly, these tragic incidents have left the community in shock and mourning the loss of these individuals. The rise in suicide cases within Bulawayo has ignited deep concern amongst community members and calls for urgent action. Many are now questioning what measures can be taken to address the underlying issues contributing to such an alarming trend, especially concerning mental health support and counseling
