Noble Hands Trust
Noble Hands Trust under the program Albinism Konnect has embarked on a music project to improve the livelihoods of people with albinism and raise awareness for the recognition of their rights in Zimbabwe.
In an interview with Kontuthu news reporter, Noble Hands Trust Director, Willard Musiyarira said that Albinism Konnect embarked on a new music art project called “We Are One People” in efforts to raise awareness on the recognition of albinism in African Society.
The Music
“The music project is part of the Albinism Konnect blueprint to improve the livelihoods of people with albinism through advocacy with the scope of raising awareness about the condition putting an end to an immemorial of inequality, discrimination, stereotypes, stigma, harmful practices and inequality against people with albinism in Zimbabwe and beyond,” stated Musiyarira.
The music project was initiated after the realisation that there are many talented young people with albinism in Zimbabwe, who fail to rise due to poverty and the rough arts terrain in the country. The project hopes to create role models from the community to inspire other people with albinism to pursue their dreams.
Raising Awareness
Musiyarira also highlighted that the music project is an innovative way of raising awareness about albinism and empowering people with albinism.
He said, “Ultimately we also wanted to use a different approach in educating the society about Albinism by giving the persons with albinism a leading role in raising and speaking out on issues affecting them creatively.”
Musiyarira added that the project hopes to create a more inclusive society that values and respects people with albinism for their talents and abilities, rather than focusing on their condition.
Musiyarira explained, “The aim of the project is to create a platform that will help to raise awareness and foster acceptance and inclusion of persons with albinism in African society. We believe that when we come together as one, there’s nothing we can’t achieve”.
Musiyarira also stated that the goal is to create role models from the community to inspire other people with albinism to pursue their dreams regardless of the perceptions, mythical cultural beliefs, and misconceptions about albinism.
Often Discriminated
Albinism is a rare genetic condition that affects people all over the world. In Africa, people who have albinism are often discriminated against, and are sometimes even hunted and killed for their body parts, which are believed to bring good luck in witchcraft. Some myths associated with albinism include that they are cursed or that they have magical powers.

“We Are One People”, seeks to bring people together and highlight the importance of embracing diversity and promoting inclusion.
Supported by a team of musicians and activists, Musiyarira hopes to use music art and collaborative efforts to educate people about albinism and work towards a society that values diversity, promotes inclusivity and combats discrimination.
Rudo Amor, Thandiwe and Queen of BaTonga were among the group that launched the album on 28 April 2023.
Support Groups
Besides this initiative, Noble Hands Trust also have support groups for people with albinism that they use to share knowledge and experiences aimed at dealing with mental health issues that arise from discrimination, stigma and traumatic experiences that sometimes affect the community.
They also use social media and other available platforms to raise the call for promotion of equality and equity in respect of people with albinism in Zimbabwe and beyond. On policy level they also petitioned Parliament of Zimbabwe on a number of issues spanning from access to equitable health, education, empowerment and justice.
