Bulawayo Celebrates its Heritage & Culture on Annual Commemorative Day
Minister for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Funds, Judith Ncube emphasized the importance of recognizing the city’s history and diversity as the city of Bulawayo celebrated its heritage and culture on 1 June 2023.
Speaking at the Bulawayo Day celebrations, Ncube said, “It is a great honour that we are commemorating Bulawayo Day because it symbolises that we value our culture and heritage as residents of Bulawayo.”
Cultural Expression
Ncube emphasized that the day provides a platform for social and cultural expression as residents celebrate the city’s diversity.
Moreover, she reminded residents that the identity of the city dates back to the arrival of King Mzilikazi, who came to Bulawayo in 1840.

“Hence the celebrations are anchored on the rich history, heritage and legacy,” she said.
Showcasing Cultural Traditions
As such, the celebrations featured traditional dance performances, music and poetry showcasing the different cultures and traditions of Bulawayo.
Ncube praised the residents for their active participation and encouraged them to continue to celebrate and value their culture and heritage.
Upholding Cultural Values
“It is crucial that we recognize Bulawayo Day as it seeks to provide a platform of social and cultural expression through the celebration of our diversity,” Ncube added. “Let us continue to uphold our cultural values, traditions and heritage, as we work towards building a stronger, more united community in Bulawayo.”

In an interview with Phathisa Nyathi, a historian and cultural activist, he expressed that while it may be important to some people, it is important to view the celebration through a politically and culturally conscious lens.
Historical Context
Additionally, Nyathi referred to the establishment of Bulawayo in 1888 as a form of colonial conquest, and therefore not something to be celebrated.
Thusly, explaining that it is essential to understand the historical and social context of the naming and creation of the city and uncover the various facets and dimensions that informed its formation and development.

He called for understanding and appreciation of the various cultural traits, political implications, and social landscapes that inform the history of Bulawayo.
Moreover, Nyathi highlighted the importance of unpacking the city’s history and the various factors that led to the creation of cultural landmarks and legacies.
Promoting Local History & Culture
Lastly, Nyathi commended recent efforts to renovate historic landmarks, such as the courthouse, and emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting local history and culture.

Nyathi conveyed that, despite cultural shortcomings and limitations in knowledge, it is everyone’s responsibility to play a role in promoting and preserving Bulawayo culture.
