Bulawayo Mayor Calls for Collaborative Efforts on World Water Day
The Mayor of the City of Bulawayo, Senator David Coltart commemorated World Water Day today, emphasising the critical importance of water conservation and the need for collective action to address the current water scarcity and drought challenges facing the region.
Coltart urged residents and stakeholders to join forces in leveraging water for peace and sustainable development.
Under the theme “Leveraging Water for Peace,” this year’s World Water Day celebrations aimed to highlight the positive impact that cooperation and shared responsibility can have on water management, leading to harmony, prosperity, and resilience in the face of common challenges.
Severe Crisis
In his press statement, Mayor Coltart acknowledged the severe water crisis faced by Bulawayo due to poor rainfall patterns and the effects of the El Nino phenomenon and climate change. He stressed the irreplaceable nature of water as a precious resource in daily life and the urgent need for collaborative efforts to ensure its availability for current and future generations.
“The City of Bulawayo realises that water can be a tool for peace,” Mayor Coltart stated.
He added, “We are focused on embracing cooperative approaches, working with various stakeholders, including the government, private-public partnerships, international communities, non-governmental organisations, academia, residents, and diplomatic missions, to ensure equitable access to water.”
Optimism and Collaboration
Highlighting the significance of partnerships, Mayor Coltart expressed optimism that leveraging water resources together would contribute to sustainable development, stability, and peace in the region. He emphasised the city’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure water and sanitation for all by 2030.
The City of Bulawayo has been implementing various measures to address water scarcity, including the exploration of alternative water sources, infrastructure development, and public awareness campaigns on water conservation practices. However, the challenges remain significant, necessitating a united front in overcoming them.
World Water Day
As World Water Day is celebrated, Coltart urged teamwork and inclusivity, emphasising that no one should be left behind in the pursuit of a more peaceful world through water conservation and management.
In conclusion, Coltart encouraged all residents of Bulawayo to join the city’s efforts and play an active role in preserving water resources. He reiterated the significance of this year’s theme, urging everyone to recognize the critical role water plays in fostering peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
