Bulawayo Polytechnic Embraces Curriculum Overhaul to Nurture Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Bulawayo stakeholders have implored for the urgent need to revamp the institution’s curriculum to better align with market demands and foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among students.
This was highlighted during a breakfast meeting at Bulawayo Polytechnic held on 10 July attended by government officials, researchers, educators, and industry professionals.
During the meeting, a representative from OK Mart Bulawayo highlighted the importance of adapting the structure of learning to keep up with market changes.
She stated, “The economy is changing, and teaching students theories alone is not enough. We need to teach them to be innovative and develop their own unique products or businesses.”
In addition, she further emphasised the need for students not to solely rely on finding employment after graduation. Instead, they highlighted the importance of cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset.
She argued, “We should focus less on teaching theories and more on ensuring that students graduate with the skills to open their own companies.”
ZB Bank Relationship Manager, Nigel Ndiweni suggested incorporating marketing lessons throughout various courses in the economy, including accounting, economics, and banking. He believes that marketing should be compulsory, as it equips students with the skills to market their own plans and develop their own unique brands.
Expanding on this idea, he suggested that even engineering students could benefit from a marketing sector or subject.
He stated, “Introducing a marketing sector in engineering will enable individuals to have confidence in building and creating unique products or brands.”
These insightful ideas resonated with the attendees and were well-received throughout the breakfast meeting. The importance of an adaptable curriculum that focuses on students’ ability to innovate, create, and market their own products and businesses was reiterated.
As the meeting progressed, educators and industry professionals agreed on the urgent need for a paradigm shift in business education. They acknowledged that the industry landscape is no longer the same as it used to be and that in order to thrive, students must be equipped with a diverse set of skills.
In response to these discussions, Bulawayo Polytechnic Principal Chiedza Masanganise pledged to take these insights into consideration when refining their curriculum.
The Principal of Bulawayo Polytechnic assured attendees that their ideas would be thoroughly considered and implemented to prepare students adequately for the future.
Masanganise stated, “We value the opinions shared during this breakfast meeting, and we are committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure our students are well-equipped for the changing business landscape. We will work on incorporating more market-focused courses and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship across all disciplines.”
The meeting concluded with gratitude from the participants for the opportunity to voice their ideas and be a part of the educational transformation at Bulawayo Polytechnic. It was evident that the discussions held that morning would have a significant impact on the way business education is approached at the institution.
