Bulawayo Residents Hopeful for Improved Living Conditions Under Selected Councillors and MPs
Bulawayo residents have expressed high expectations from their newly elected councillors and Members of Parliament who were voted on 23 August 2023.
The residents are hopeful that their demands for better living conditions will be met by the newly elected officials.
The city has faced numerous challenges in the past, with a lack of infrastructure, water shortages and basic services affecting the lives of the citizens. The incoming officials have promised to address these challenges, and the residents are optimistic that they will deliver on their promises.
One of the key demands from the residents is the need for formal trading structures for vendors. The current informal trade structures leave traders vulnerable to harassment and eviction.
“We hope that the new councillors will create formal market stalls where we can carry out our business without fear of eviction or harassment,” said one vendor.
Trading Spaces
Another critical issue is the need for trading spaces and licenses for small businesses.
“Many young people in the city are unemployed, and trading is the only way they can support their families. We hope that the councillors will prioritize the provision of trading spaces and licenses for these young people,” said one resident, Busisiwe Moyo.
The residents also want the new councillors and MPs to prioritize infrastructure development, including the construction of new roads and bridges. The current road network is in poor condition, and it is a challenge for motorists to navigate the city’s congested streets.
Furthermore, the residents have called for clean water to be made available to all citizens, regardless of their location or socio-economic status. Many residents in the city’s suburbs especially Cowdray Park lack access to clean water, which forces them to rely on long tiresome queues for borehole water.
Failing Infrastructure
Bulawayo is also facing serious challenges with its sewer system, and the residents are hopeful that the new officials will address this issue urgently. In Cowdray Park people use blair toilets and some even resorting to bush for recess.
“We have been suffering for many years due to inadequate sanitation facilities, and we hope that the new councillors will prioritize the upgrade of the city’s sewer system,” said one Cowdray Park resident identified as Wendy Sibanda.
People living with disabilities also want the new officials to prioritize their inclusion in their plans and future projects. There is a large number of disabled people in the city who face challenges in accessing public services and facilities.
Dreams of a Better City
A Nguboyenja resident living with disability said, “As you can see I cannot walk but I have children to look after so I wish to be counted in projects that will come in the future.”
In an interview the residents of Bulawayo seemed to be optimistic that the new councillors and MPs will take their expectations seriously and work towards achieving their dreams of a better city.
Lastly, the incoming officials have a significant role to play in improving the lives of the residents, and it remains to be seen how they will deliver on their promises.
