Bulawayo Residents Raise Concerns over Neglected Burst Sewer and Water Pipes
Bulawayo residents have expressed frustration with the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) over the delay in fixing burst water and sewer pipes, causing health risks and limiting access to safe, clean, and portable water.
According to residents, the council has been neglecting their duties for a long time, which has resulted in serious damages to property and perhaps exorbitant rates.
In an alarming incident witnessed on 9th Avenue, BCC’s shoddy work in fixing a burst water pipe was evident. While initial repairs were attempted, a video clip of the aftermath showed that the damage had not been properly addressed. This incident, captured by a concerned resident, highlights a pattern of neglect which has been a recurring issue.
Council’s Negligence
A long-time resident and ratepayer, Thulani Moyo, expressed his frustration, saying, “We pay our rates and taxes faithfully, expecting quality service delivery in return. It’s disheartening to witness the council’s negligence when it comes to maintaining our essential infrastructure. Burst sewer and water pipes have become a common sight in our city, compromising our health and well-being.”
Another concerned resident,Jane Ncube added, “The lack of attention given to these burst pipes is simply unacceptable. We are left with contaminated water sources and exposed to potential disease outbreaks. BCC needs to prioritize the well-being of its residents and act promptly to fix these issues.”

Residents have also expressed concerns about the financial implications of recurring burst pipes. With ratepayer funds being diverted to address the same issue repeatedly due to incomplete or ineffective repairs, residents fear their money is being wasted instead of being allocated to other pressing community needs.
Unfulfilled Promises
In relation to these concerns, Bulawayo ward 17 councillor, Skhululekile Moyo suggested that local municipality should have community plumbers who will be readily available to attend sewer problems.
However, some residents remain skeptical, questioning the council’s commitment to resolving the issue. They argue that previous promises have not been fulfilled, and immediate action is required instead of mere rhetoric.
The impact on public health cannot be understated. Contaminated water poses a serious threat to the community, especially during a time when access to clean water is crucial for sanitation and hygiene practices. Residents believe that the council should work in partnership with experts and allocate resources effectively to ensure consistent maintenance and repairs to the city’s water and sewer infrastructure.
Concrete Action
The negligence of the BCC in attending to burst sewer and water pipes in Bulawayo has raised concerns among residents. The recurring nature of these incidents, lack of immediate action, and the subsequent diversion of ratepayer funds remain major issues.
Lastly, the council has since acknowledged the problem and promised to address it, but residents demand concrete actions to prevent further compromise of their access to safe, clean, and portable water.
