Community Messengers uses art to raise awareness on gender-based violence in Zimbabwe
A Bulawayo Art organisation known as Community Messengers is raising awareness on gender-based violence through drama, dance and music in an effort to create a community that is free from all forms of gender-based violence.
In an interview with Community Messengers team leader, Thulani Jason Muzenda, he said that the organization presented a performance that mainly focused on sexual harassment in informal spaces during a anti-sexual harassment campaign hosted by Zimbabwe Chambers of Informal Economy Associations on 30 November.

Our Campaign
Muzenda said, “We presented a performance which mainly focuses on sexual harassment in informal spaces which we felt like doesn’t have enough attention or enough representation when we advocate and campaign against gender based violence.”
The team leader stated that the organisation’s goal is to create a community that is free from all forms of gender-based violence. The target audience for the performance was the general public, as everyone interacts with people who make a living in the informal sector. The group aimed to raise awareness about how people interact with each other in these spaces.
“We Are known as the Community Messengers our job is to be the voice of the public hence we have done campaigns on gender equality, free and fair election campaigns, Inclusion of minority groups etc,” he revealed.

Power of Art
Community Messengers is a non-political, youthful, and innovative community-based arts organisation that is using the power of art to advocate against gender-based violence. The group’s performance during the anti-sexual harassment in the informal sector launch is a testament to their commitment to creating a better world for everyone.
Muzenda also said, “We believe that art is a powerful tool for social change. Our performances are aimed at raising awareness about gender-based violence and promoting a culture of respect for human rights and freedom in Zimbabwe. We are committed to using our art to create a better world for everyone.”
