Environmental Degradation: Chinese Quarry Mining activities threat to Pumula residents
A CHINESE Quarry Mining firm, Haulin Quarry Mine is being accused of contaminating the environment by discharging noxious fumes and dust into the atmosphere in Pumula North suburb in Bulawayo.
The residents have approached the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) complaining over the issue. They have also complained that the firm is damaging homes which have developed cracks with its activities.
Furthermore, the firm began mining operations in 2021 and it has been at loggerheads with the residents over the issue which has not been attended to. EMA Bulawayo Provincial spokesperson, Memory Kapumba said they received the complaints about the mining firm from Pumula residents.
Responsible Authority’s Response
Moreover, Memory went on to state that, “we received complaints about the operating firm from ward 17 residents, and as the agency we are consulting all relevant stakeholders of the company”.
“Blasting is the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development’s responsibility because they are the major player in the engagement process. We are waiting for their feedback on the status of the issue and its effects,” she said in a statement.
Mining Activities
When the mining firm was given the license to operate in the area, it was agreed that it will operate according to the Mines and Mineral Act requirements and council by-laws.
Lastly, the Quarry mining firm was encouraged to work the Ministry to reduce the impacts of their operations on the residents and the environment.
