City of Bulawayo Receives Additional Fire Tenders to Improve Emergency Response
The City of Bulawayo has received a donation of four fire tenders from the government of Zimbabwe in an effort to strengthen its capabilities in disaster management and improve emergency response.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon Judith Ncube commissioned the fire tenders that were purchased through devolution funds on 23 November.
In her speech, Hon Ncube highlighted the importance of fire safety and prevention, emphasising that the newly acquired fire tenders were crucial in maintaining public safety, protecting property, and reducing the risk of fire-related incidents.
Hon Ncube stated, “The Government of Zimbabwe commits itself towards ensuring the safety of the public and will continually be on the lookout for opportunities that improve service delivery to the citizenry.”
She acknowledged the delays in emergency response and reassured the public of the government’s commitment to improving the responsiveness of local authorities.
Furthermore, Mayor Senator David Coltart expressed gratitude for the four fire tenders received, acknowledging the increasing number of fire incidents in Bulawayo.
Fire Prevention
He revealed that in the past five years, the fire brigade had responded to 2,513 fire calls, with 675 incidents reported in 2021 alone. The Mayor highlighted the role of awareness campaigns in educating residents on fire prevention and urged adherence to fire safety guidelines. He also emphasized the need for continued partnerships between central and local government for effective service delivery.
Moreover, Bulawayo has experienced a surge in fire incidents this year. The city has witnessed an increase in property fires and veld fires, resulting in significant financial losses for residents and business owners. One such incident occurred at the Mutize Flea Market, where an estimated $500,000 worth of goods was destroyed by fire.
The recent fire outbreaks in Bulawayo have highlighted the need for enhanced fire and emergency response capabilities. The additional fire tenders received from the government of Zimbabwe aim to improve response time and operational fleet for fire and emergency services in the city.
The handover of the fire tenders showcases the government’s commitment to promoting safety and reaffirms its vision of an empowered and prosperous upper-middle-income society by 2030. The procurement of the fire tenders was made possible through devolution funds, further emphasizing the partnership between central and local government in service delivery.
Fire Fighting Capabilities
The City of Bulawayo has expressed its appreciation for the assistance received, acknowledging the value of equipping and training fire personnel. The new fire tenders, coupled with previous donations from Operation Florian, are set to enhance the city’s fire and incident management capabilities.
Mayor Senator David Coltart also appealed for continued support from the government, urging the provision of additional equipment and infrastructure to improve service delivery.
Lastly, with the acquisition of the four fire tenders, the City of Bulawayo aims to minimize the impact of fire incidents, protect lives and property, and ensure the safety of its residents.
