Good Samaritan Thwarts Attempted Rape of Elderly Woman in Bulawayo
A 78-year-old woman was narrowly rescued from a horrific fate when a teenager, attempted to rape her in broad daylight.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the arrest of a 19-year-old identified as Brighton Ncube.
“On the 2nd of August 2023 at around 1500 hours, the complainant was at the SDA church yard at Mabutweni, waiting for other congregants to come and have a church service. She was approached by the accused person who sat next to her and said that the complainant looked familiar to him,” said Inspector Ncube.
The Assault
He added, “The complainant became suspicious of the accused person’s behaviour and then left the church yard for Mabutweni residential area to locate one of the congregants to accompany her home. When she was about 10 metres away, the accused person followed her from behind and tripped her to the ground forcing her to lie facing upwards. The accused person stuffed soil in the complainant’s mouth, closed it using his hands and went on top of the complainant and tried to unzip his trousers.”

It was at this critical moment that a passer-by, whose identity remains anonymous, intervened and bravely came to the elderly woman’s rescue.
The Good Samaritan
The Good Samaritan chased Ncube as he desperately sought refuge at Insukamini Primary School. With the assistance of school security personnel, Ncube’s attempt to elude capture was foiled, and he was apprehended.
Inspector Ncube commended the actions of the community and emphasized the need for such active participation in preventing crimes.
He noted, “We appreciate members of the public who managed to pursue the accused person which led to his arrest. This active community participative behaviour needs to be emulated by the whole of Bulawayo if we are to achieve a crime free status as a province.”

Investigations Continue
Inspector Ncube further stated that the behaviour shown by the accused may be an indication that he might have abused drugs or some substance considering his age and that of his victim as well as time of occurrence even the place.
Lastly, as investigations continue, the victim’s traumatic experience serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerability faced by elderly members of society. It sparks a renewed call for greater protection and support to be provided to all individuals, regardless of age or gender.
