High School children arrested in Malindela Vuzu Party
Bulawayo police have arrested nine school children and a school leaver at a Vuzu party in Malindela on 25 January.
Bulawayo Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the arrest of six boys from Milton high, one male school leaver aged 17 and 3 girls from Evelyn High who were at a Vuzu Party at house number 12 Browning Road, Malindela Bulawayo.
He said, “On the 25th of January 2024 at around 0900 hours Police received a tip-off that there was a Vuzu Party at the above mentioned address. Upon arrival at the said house, police interviewed a male Juvenile aged 14 years residing at that same address who was found standing outside the main house.”
Red Handed
“He revealed that he is a Form 2 pupil at Milton High. He then directed Police to the cottage where they found 7 more students from ages of 14 to 16 years and one school leaver, a 17 year old boy who were busy smoking Shisha and Chelsea Cigarettes as well as playing soft music,” explained Insp Ncube.
The majority of the students came from various neighbourhoods across Bulawayo, including Magwegwe West, Old Lobengula, Emakhandeni, Ntumbane, Bellevue, Khumalo, and Malindela.
Insp Ncube revealed that according to the students, they were celebrating a friend’s birthday and had previously hosted similar parties at the residence. Surprisingly, the father of one of the students, who occupies the house, claimed to be completely unaware of the illicit activities occurring in his absence. He explained that he works as a Vendor in the bustling town and spends the entire day away from the property.
Released
Following their arrest, the students were released into the custody of their senior teachers.
In light of this incident, Inspector Ncube, commended the public for providing crucial information leading to the successful apprehension of the accused individuals.
“The quick reaction by the police saved lives of the students from further decay, however we urge parents and guardians to have continuous communication with their children on the issues to do with drugs and vuzu parties as this has become a major threat to humanity,” he said.
Underage Drinking
Vuzu Parties, widely known for their association with underage drinking, drug use, and other illicit activities, have been a cause for concern in Bulawayo. These events, typically hosted in private residences, draw in young attendees, lured by the promise of freedom and uninhibited fun.
However, the lack of parental supervision and the prevalence of drug use have raised alarm bells among law enforcement and concerned citizens. Authorities have been working tirelessly to curtail these dangerous gatherings, which can have lasting consequences on the lives of young individuals involved.
