Bulawayo Drug Abuse Hotspot
Roman Catholic Father Herbert Banda organised an interfaith symposium on drug abuse. The symposium was held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Entumbane after the township was named a hotspot in Bulawayo.
Like many other parts of the world, drug abuse is a significant problem in Zimbabwe, including Bulawayo. The commonly abused drugs in Zimbabwe include marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, as well as prescription drugs such as codeine and benzodiazepines. The abuse of these drugs can lead to serious health and social problems, including addiction, mental health disorders, crime, and violence. The Zimbabwean government has taken steps to combat drug abuse. They have done so by establishing drug treatment centres and increasing drug education and awareness programs. However, drug abuse remains a significant challenge in the country, and much more needs to be done to address this issue effectively.
The Symposium
The symposium was held in February 2023 attended by various stakeholders and youth from different religions. Banda stated that the importance of such an event is establishing a healing contribution. In addition, to contribute as a religious sector and for religious ministers to be well educated or informed on what is happening in our communities. “A symposium like this would expose religious ministers to know exactly what goes on so that our approaches to assist to find solutions will then be concrete and practical,” said Banda.
Zimbabwe is a predominately religious population (86% according to The United States Department of State, International Religious Freedom Report). Interfaith parties can play a crucial role in helping Bulawayo communities fight against drug abuse. This can be achieved in several ways by promoting awareness and education. Moreover, they can also use their platforms to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. Community faith leaders can be expected to promote education by organizing workshops, and seminars to inform the public.
Mental Health a Factor
Banda went on to state that making this first step will kickstart the healing process. This symposium is crucial for those that are still thinking to abuse drugs. Mental health therapist, Blessing Masola states that the symposium is meant to raise awareness, and educate people on the dangers of abusing drugs and substances.
Masola mentioned that youths are loosing their minds due to abuse of drugs and substances. This is due to their inability to handle pressure and life challenges without solving them with other ways. “After this symposium as youth we need to change the narrative towards drugs, let us not alter our mental health through drugs and let us learn to experience true happiness without using drugs”, she stated.
Moreover, Masola added that parents should teach their children and address them about social pressures at home or else the world will do on their behalf.
Early this year, President Mnangagwa urged churches to help Government efforts in the fight against substance abuse among youths. Meanwhile, police in Bulawayo have declared war against drug traffickers and abusers. Stating that those found in possession or under the influence of illicit drug substances will be dealt with.
