Kombi driver killed over $1 fare
A Kombi driver was stabbed to death by an artisanal miner in Bulawayo after the miner refused to pay the $1 fare to Cowdray Park, resulting in a misunderstanding.
Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the arrest of a Liberty Moyo (24) and appealed to the public to assist with information that can lead to the arrest of Nkosilathi Sibanda who is still at large.
“We have arrested Liberty Moyo, aged 24 from Cowdray Park who is an artisanal miner in Inyathi area. His co-accused Nkolisathi Sibanda fled after committing the crime. This occurred on 26 August at around 20:22 hours. The two boarded the vehicle, which was enroute to Cowdray Park,” said Ins Ncube.
He said that the co-accused refused to pay the stipulated fare, which is a $1 leading to a misunderstanding.
“When they got into the vehicle, they refused to pay the fare which is a $1 each. This prompted the driver to stop the vehicle to assist his friend in collecting the money since there was resistance. Before he could get out of the vehicle Moyo stabbed the driver in the left side of his shoulder and palm,” said Inspector Ncube.
He added, “This is when other passengers disembarked and ran away. The two gave chase to the driver and stabbed him in the chest before he fell to the ground.”
Inspector Ncube revealed that other passengers chased and only managed to apprehend Moyo. Quickly Chabata was ferried to Mpilo hospital, where he later died.
In light of the incident, Inspector Ncube urged members of public to desist from violence otherwise it’s best not to board motor vehicle if you know you don’t have money to pay for the fare.
He added, “We are also appealing for information that can lead to the arrest of liberty memorials friend, Sibanda who resides in Cowdray Park. Those with information can approach any nearest police station so that we can put this matter to rest.”
