Matabeleland North Urged to Fully Support Zimbabwe’s First Economic Census
Matabeleland North businesses and public at large have been urged to welcome and support the ZIMSTAT officials, who play a crucial role in gathering data for the economic census.
In a significant move to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and attract investments, Zimbabwe in 2025 will embark on its first-ever economic census. The initiative aims to gather accurate and comprehensive data that will inform targeted policies for the province’s development and poverty alleviation.
Representing the Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Godfrey Mukwakwami, the director of Economic Affairs and Investment said that the exercise is not meant to target individuals but rather aims to benefit everyone, he underlined the need for collective efforts to improve the provincial economy.
“This is the first time we are conducting an economic census in Zimbabwe. While we are used to population censuses, the economic census provides critical and specific insights necessary for crafting effective policies,” Mukwakwami explained.
The primary objective of the economic census is to obtain accurate information about the province’s economic state, which will enable the government to develop targeted policies aligned with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 of achieving upper middle-income status. By utilising actual data rather than projections or estimations, the government aims to ensure policies that deliver desired outcomes such as poverty alleviation, employment creation, and economic growth.
Additionally, the census will help identify specific areas within the province that require targeted interventions, such as infrastructure improvements. By having a clear understanding of the province’s needs, the government will be better equipped to allocate resources and implement initiatives that address specific challenges and opportunities.
Furthermore, the economic census serves as a vital tool in attracting investment to the region.
“By obtaining detailed information about areas lacking investment and those with untapped resources, the census provides valuable insights for promoting investment opportunities,” Mukwakwami emphasised.
Armed with this information, the government will have a strategic advantage in showcasing the province’s potential to potential investors, ultimately accelerating sustainable economic growth and development.
During the side interview, Mukwakwami stressed the significance of accurate and reliable data in formulating effective policies. He explained that without accurate information, policies may fail to achieve desired outcomes, hindering progress and growth.
The director highlights the importance of cooperation and support from businesses, stakeholders, and citizens in the province, urging them to work closely with ZIMSTAT officials and enumerators during the economic census.
In closing, Mukwakwami urged the public to welcome and support the ZIMSTAT officials, who play a crucial role in gathering data for the economic census. Emphasising that the exercise is not meant to target individuals but rather aims to benefit everyone, he underlined the need for collective efforts to improve the provincial economy.
The nation’s economic census represents a significant milestone in its quest for sustainable growth and development. By embracing the accurate insights derived from this initiative, the government will be better equipped to formulate policies that address the province’s specific needs. Moreover, the data collected will play a vital role in attracting investment opportunities, ultimately paving the way for a prosperous future for the country.
