Miners from Matabeleland region have lamented the exorbitant fees on the Mines and Minerals Ammendment Bill saying the fees must be allocated according to mining sizes and production.
Commenting during the public hearing held in Bulawayo on Tuesday by Parliamentary Portifolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development a Vanguard mine Syndicate representative, Lionel Usher said that the Ammendment Bill defeats the objective of indigenous people, entrepreneurs hence the fees structure must be determined by the size and production of mine.
Usher said, “In the mining industry there is division that is small scale mines, medium scale mines and large scale mines and government cannot classify all mines as large scale like How Mine hence it should put prices specifically for small scale mines, medium scale mines and large scale mines.”
A former student of Zimbabwe School of Mines suggested that the mining fees should be reduced to a reasonable and accommodative price to at least a thousand dollars so that those who want to start mining with small capital will find it easier to start.
However some artisinal miners proposed that the government should sponsor and empower miners just like farming where it provides loans and inputs considering youths who also want to venture into mining industry without capital.
A small scale miner, Liberty Mlambo proposed, “We need tanks and other equipment to handle crushed dumps. Instead of taking away our crushed dump, the government should assist us with loans to build tanks to handle these dumps.”
