Minister Chitando Assures Bulawayo Water Crisis Resolution
Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Winston Chitando outlined the government’s top priority for addressing the water crisis in Bulawayo, stating discussions with the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement, Hon. Minister Dr. Anxious Jongwe Masuka had already begun.
During the briefing at the Bulawayo City Council Chambers recently, Chitando assured the media that there will be a solution to all water problems in the city.
He said, “The Government’s continuous concern demonstrates its seriousness with which it takes the water supply situation in Bulawayo.”
Short-term Solutions
The Minister discussed short-term, medium-term, and long-term solutions to the water crisis. In the short term, the government plans to improve security at Nyamandlovu Aquifer and facilitate investment of $40 million to address water supply in Bulawayo. Chitando highlighted the need for funding partners to participate in resolving the water situation.
Regarding medium-term solutions, the Minister mentioned Glass Block as a key project that will increase the inflow of water to Bulawayo by 70%. He explained, “A 32 km pipeline is required to take water from Glass Block to Ncema, at the same time, upgrade facilities at Ncema to pump the increased water to Bulawayo.”
For long-term solutions, Chitando talked about the Gwayi Shangani dam project that will increase water inflow by 80%. He emphasised the importance of implementing short-term and medium-term solutions before focusing on the long-term plan.
Finding Solutions
Bulawayo Mayor, David Coltart, expressed gratitude for the government’s understanding of the crisis and the engagement to find solutions towards the water crisis. He highlighted the need to secure Nyamandlovu, divert the Mtshabezi pipeline, and improve pumping and pipelines to ensure water availability.
In conclusion, Minister Chitando reiterated the government’s dedication to resolving the water crisis in Bulawayo. He called for collaboration and partnerships to support the government’s efforts in providing a sustainable water supply for all citizens. The urgency of the issue and the need for immediate action were emphasised throughout the press briefing.
