Police Detectives Injured in Shootout with Armed Robbers, Three Suspects Arrested
Two police detectives were injured during a shootout with armed robbers in Bulawayo who robbed over $7,800 in cash, jewellery, firearms, and ammunition at Insindi Ranch in Gwanda on 30 July.
According to press statement released by National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi during the apprehension process, Vusumuzi Moyo resisted arrest and engaged the police in a shootout. As a result, two detectives, Detective Assistant Inspector Richard Charamba and Detective Constable Albert Madziva, as well as a civilian, Siwinile Ndlovu, were injured and are currently being treated at Mpilo Hospital.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi confirmed the arrest saiying, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Alex Cabangani Moyo (37), Vusumuzi Moyo (27) and Mlungusi Sibanda (44) after a shootout in Bulawayo.”

He added, “This is in connection with a case of armed robbery which occurred at Insindi Ranch, Gwanda on 30th July 2023 where three (3) family members were attacked before US$7 800.00 cash, jewelery worth US$200.00, a Bulawayo Agricultural Show Society trophy, 15 X 9 mm live ammunition, FN 9 mm. Pistol loaded with 13 rounds, Cadix 0.38 revolver and an empty magazine were stolen.”

The Assistant Commissioner described the incident saying that On July 31st, detectives from the CID Homicide division apprehended Sibanda in the Bulawayo City Centre, after receiving information that linked him to the robbery case. Sibanda later implicated Alex Cabangani Moyo, who was arrested in Cowdray Park on August 1st. The arrest led to the recovery of two pellet guns, a 9mm Pak Retay Mod 92 firearm with five rounds, and a Bulawayo Agricultural Show Society trophy.
Alex Cabangani Moyo subsequently implicated Vusumuzi Moyo, who was tracked down to a house in the Nketa 9 area of Bulawayo.

Meanwhile the police have launched a manhunt for Simelweyinkosi Dube, who is believed to be involved in the robbery. According to the statement, Dube managed to escape during the shootout with the police.
The police have warned armed robbery syndicates that they will not hesitate to take appropriate measures in the fight against crime.
“Any form of confrontation or resistance will be met with the appropriate response,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.
