Mahatshula North Residents Association Chairperson, Isaac Donga has raised concern about sporadic power cuts in the area and the lack of a clear timetable for these power cuts as this causes discord in the coordination of their homes and businesses since last year.
Donga said that they have been a time in December where a family’s food worth $200 got rotten and families who stock their fridges complain about food spoiling, worsened by the power utility which has no longer a fixed schedule of electricity cuts.
He said, “Lack of power is making life difficult for us. We can no longer stock staff in our fridges now it’s all rotting in the refrigerator as power cut at times for many hours or days. “
Donga also added that in urban areas we depend on electricity and we need it in our lives therefore we ask responsible office to resolve this problem as many people are finding it hard to cook basic meals.
One of the residents, Ruth Moyo who is a health worker said that power cuts are really affecting as I work with people with HIV whom I need to contact everytime yet my phone would be off.
She also said that power cuts are now leading to high cost of living because we are now forced to buy perishable food at local shops everyday which are very expensive because refrigerators are off.
ZETDC Western region manager Engineer Lloyd Jaji confirmed the reports and said, “We are aware of these outages as well as other areas all over town. Most of the outages are a result of a combination of load shedding and vandalism.
“We have to combine loss control forces to stop the vandalism which besides draining our resources is man made,” said Jaji.
