Power cuts in Bulawayo amidst ZITF.
Still no ZESA
Residents of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city, are still facing an acute power crisis despite other areas in the country experiencing improvements in electricity generation.
According to the Zimbabwe Economic Review, Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) is generating 1800MW of peak demand and 60% of national peak demand. However there is no power being generated in the city of Bulawayo.
Power Crisis
The city’s power crisis has caused blackouts, rolling power cuts and businesses to suffer financial losses as they struggle to keep operations running due to the lack of sufficient electricity. Despite efforts to alleviate the power shortages, the crisis in Bulawayo persists.
The local government is working to bring in new generators to power the city, but it could take some time.
Today, the power crisis in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe has become even more dire than before despite overall power generation improving across the country. This means that the area of Bulawayo has no power generation whatsoever.
Affecting Livelihoods
Speaking to a welder who is based in Old Magwegwe, Thulani Moyo power crisis is affecting his work hence his livelihood. Moyo said, “Electricity shortages is really disturbing my work, welding requires power of which we get power during the night. No customers will come at night.
“He pleaded that ZETDC should also provide power even for few hours during the day so that people who depend on power may earn a living.
Another businessman, Allen Zhou from Old Lobengula bemoaned power cuts saying as a butchery owner I’m at huge risk of loss. “Power cuts are affecting my business as meat quickly go bad. I am now supplying in low quantities because power cuts have no schedule,” said Zhou.
Private Sector Investors
Meanwhile, According to Herald ZPC is looking for private sector investors with large power demands to take over, modernise and run its three small thermal power stations in Harare, Munyati and Bulawayo in return for guaranteed power supplies.
