Residents Concerned Over Lack of Bins and Public Toilets in the CBD
Bulawayo residents are pleading with the local authority to provide bins and toilets in the Central Business District (CBD) to keep the city clean.
The issue of shortage of bins and toilets in CBD has been raised in almost each and every public meeting in Bulawayo.
Speaking during the Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) Ward 7 councillor feedback meeting, residents highlighted the issue of bin shortages in the city which is making it difficult for them to adhere to Environmental Management Agency (EMA) regulations.
One Thing Missing
During National Clean Up Campaign which was held last Saturday residents pleaded with Bulawayo City Council to provide enough bins in the congested areas to keep the city clean.
“One thing lacking in Bulawayo is having bins at congested areas like market and Pick and Pay Hyper. These places require enough bins,” said one concerned resident, Thulani Dube.
CBD informal traders during a meeting hosted by the Bulawayo Informal Sector Working Group to discuss the impact of the Finance ministry and Zimra’s Tax Certificate measures on the business community, wholesalers, retailers and informal traders revealed the issue of lack of public toilets in the CBD.
Worrying Issue
An unidentified resident said, “Lack of public toilets is another worrying issue in the city. What is Council saying about it? I have seen dumped used pampers and human waste in the corridors.”
Commenting on the issue of toilets, Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association Executive Director and secretary for Bulawayo Informal Sector Working Group, Michael Ndiweni blamed the residents for being irresponsible for not cleaning the toilet the organisation refurbished.
Ndiweni said, “In 2020 we as BVTA and WILD refurbished toilet at Fife Street and Fifth Avenue, we changed the floor from cement to ceramic tiles and painted it. However, if you go there now you won’t even step inside. Who is to blame?”
