Two women arrested for drug possession (meth) in Bulawayo
Bulawayo Police have arrested two women in Pumula Old for unlawful possession of methcathinone, a dangerous and addictive stimulant drug.
According to Bulawayo Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube Nokuthaba Sibanda (31) and Lindiwe Mhlanga (25) were apprehended on Friday after detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics Bulawayo received a tip-off from the public.
“On the 4th of November 2023, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics Bulawayo received information to the effect that the accused persons were in possession of dangerous drugs at Pumula Shops, Bulawayo,” said Inspector Ncube.
He further revealed, “Acting on the information, the detectives proceeded to the said place and they first located Nokuthaba Sibanda.”
Methcathinone
A body search was done on Sibanda and a small transparent sachet with methcathinone was recovered hidden in her blue overall hip pocket. Another sachet with the same substance was found precariously within her body.
Mhlanga was also searched and a big transparent sachet packed with six small sachets containing methcathinone was recovered hidden in her bra.
The recovered methcathinone weighed four grams in total and had a street value of US$36.
The two women were subsequently arrested and are expected to appear in court soon.

Schedule I Substance
Methcathinone is listed as a Schedule I controlled substance by the Convention on Psychotropic Substances and the United States’ Controlled Substances Act, and as such it is not considered to be safe or effective in the treatment, diagnosis, prevention, or cure of any disease, and has no approved medical use.
Methcathinone is one of the many drugs that are being abused by youths in Bulawayo and other parts of the country. According to statistics from Active Youth Zimbabwe, a drug treatment and rehabilitation organisation, the average age of substance use initiation is between 13 and 14 years old in the province.
The organisation has partnered with members of the Criminal Investigation Department, Ingutsheni Central Hospital, and several other organisations to come up with strategies to address drug abuse in Bulawayo.
About 250 drug addicts are attended to at Ingutsheni Central Hospital monthly amid worries that the number of youths abusing drugs keeps rising in Bulawayo.
Continued Support
Police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube acknowledged members of the public for their continued support in supplying tip-offs that aid the police in the execution of their duties and bringing criminals to book.
He urged the community of Bulawayo to fight the scourge of drug abuse and illegal cultivation and selling of dangerous drugs by reporting any persons that are illegally dealing in dangerous drugs to the police.
“It is important that as the community of Bulawayo we fight the scourge of drug abuse and illegal cultivation and selling of dangerous drugs by reporting any persons that are illegally dealing in dangerous drugs to the police,” he said.
