Universities urged to address socio-economic challenges in Zimbabwe.
Universities in Zimbabwe have been urged to address the socio-economic challenges faced in the country using research work and drive economic development.
Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Joram Gumbo said this after touring the construction site of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo emphasizing the importance of tertiary education and research in addressing the challenges facing Zimbabwe.
Reforming Education
Moreover, addressing people, Minister Gumbo said, “Although important strides have been made in reforming our education system, we should continue to examine whether our tertiary education is relevant in the context of rapid social and economic changes in our country.”
Furthermore, he also stressed the need to prioritize research work in tertiary institutions to assist in addressing the challenges confronting the country, highlighting areas such as economic and industrial development, poverty eradication, climate change, water, energy, and the optimal use of natural resources.
Public Services
“The expectation of the government is that higher education institutions should commit to public service and the provision of solutions to the development challenges facing our people. NUST should therefore become a vehicle for finding solutions to the challenges confronting our country and drive economic growth,” Minister Gumbo added.
The National Development Strategy 1 blueprint outlines a vision for Zimbabwe’s sustainable development, with a focus on economic growth and poverty reduction.
As part of this vision, Minister Gumbo emphasized the crucial role of higher education institutions in driving the country’s development.
Hub for Science
To add, The construction of the National University of Science and Technology is a major component of this vision, with the new campus expected to provide state-of-the-art facilities for scientific research and innovation. The university is set to become a hub for science and technology in Zimbabwe, fostering research collaborations and partnerships with local and international institutions.
