Victims of Mutizi Flea Market inferno undergo risk management training.
BULAWAYO vendors and traders whose flea market was razed by fire three months ago are undergoing a seven- day risk management training workshop with the support of Bulawayo Vendors Association (BVA) and Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in partnership with Dan Church Aid Zimbabwe.
The flea market popularly known as Mutizi flea market which is situated near Egodini area, behind the High Court along Lobengula Street, was burnt down with property worth an estimated US$500 000 reduced to ashes.
The Purpose of the training
The training workshop is meant to avail psycho-social support to the vendors who lost their wares in the inferno.
“BVA in partnership with Bulawayo Chambers of SMEs with the support of Dan Church of Zimbabwe, has kick started a week-long series of Disaster Risk Reduction trainings with the Mutizi Vendors after they lost their wares in an inferno that occurred on the 3rd of August this year,” said BVA in a statement.
What is Disaster Risk Reduction?
Disaster risk reduction is a process of assessing and managing the risks associated with natural and human-made disasters, with the aim of reducing their negative impact on people, community and businesses.
“This process involves identifying and taking steps to reduce or prevent these risks and preparing for disasters when they do occur. It’s a proactive approach to managing risk rather than simply responding after the fact,” read the statement.
Lastly, the management can take many forms, such as strengthening buildings, improving emergency plans, and raising public awareness. “In our group’s sessions of psychosocial support, we are assisted to process our trauma and find ways to move forward, and we are grateful for the opportunity,” said one of the victims.
