Zimbabwe Food Giant Supports 46 Vulnerable Communities
National Foods Limited (NFL) supports 46 vulnerable communities in Zimbabwe as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, aiming to improve lives, wellbeing, and emotional capital through social support.
Furthermore, NFL’s objective is to plough back to the communities within which the company operates by enhancing lives, improving wellbeing and building lasting emotional capital. These centres include orphanages, special needs groups, vulnerable women and children, schools, hospitals, churches, wildlife and other national social support.
NFL HR Group Executive, Alice Pawarikanda, who was the guest of honour on 7 July at the NFL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) event at Queen Elizabeth Adventist Home acknowledged everyone for attending and supporting the initiative.
Community Lives
“National Foods Limited’s objective is to plough back to the communities within which the company operates by enhancing lives, improving wellbeing and building lasting emotional capital. NFL engages in proactive initiatives which deliver an impact to the socioeconomic well-being of communities by way of investing in our society. NFL also participates in initiatives that are geared towards the preservation and long-term sustainability of the environment,” said Pawarikanda.
During the CSR event, NFL donated to four community centres including Queen Elizabeth Adventist Home, Ekuphumuleni Geriatric Nursing, Isaiah Children’s Home and Jairos Jiri. Each centre received donations in the form of food, clothing, medical supplies, and other essentials.
Queen Elizabeth Adventist Home is the oldest orphanage in Bulawayo, founded in 1952. Although registered to keep children between the ages of 0-10 years, the home has children above 17 as they are special cases. Ekuphumuleni Geriatric Nursing was established in 2007 to give quality care to the elderly until they have recovered enough to return to their homes. Presently, the home has a total of 49 patients.
Giving Back
Isaiah Children’s Home, established in 2005, works with orphaned and vulnerable children. The home has 23 boys and 14 girls. Jairos Jiri, established in 1950, provides care to handicapped adults. The home has 83 students, 52 boys and 31 girls.
Moreover, National Foods Sales Executive, Phawulani Ngwenya highlighted the company’s philosophy of giving back to the community.
“It’s very emotional because as we have seen with our beneficiaries, we’ve looked after the old people, our mothers, our grandmothers, and grandfathers or fathers to be able to emulate and we also looked after the needy, the underprivileged children,” said Ngwenya.
He added, “I’m sure all of us are Christians in some way or another. And we all understand what Jesus said about children. And for us as a company. It is one of those killers that business in that we understand that the generation of business is built around generations looking after children is that our markets can still be there for the next foreseeable future.”
Building the Community
Ngwenya also expressed the company’s commitment towards building the community by contributing in any way possible.
“We have tried to make sure that we are very much aware of people that build our communities, and we try and make sure that we contribute in some form or another,” Ngwenya added.
Lastly, the event was graced by three other centres in the Bulawayo area. The donation by National Foods to the four community centres is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of the beneficiaries, who were grateful for the gesture.
