Zimbabwean graduates urged to become job creators to fight unemployment
Zimbabwean graduates have been urged to become job creators rather than seekers in a country with rampant unemployment, according to the country’s Higher and Tertiary Education Minister, Amon Murwira.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Bulawayo Polytechnic, Raymore Machingura on behalf of Murwira told 2,278 graduates that they must create employment opportunities.
Tailored Education
Murwira implored “Through Education 5.0, our focus is on developing capabilities that entail the production of goods and services using our higher and tertiary education institutions, by utilising our God-given resources. You must not be job seekers but creators of employment and providers of goods and services to the socio-economic development of Zimbabwe”.

The minister also urged colleges to establish industries and assist graduates in forming their own manufacturing companies. “We are ready to support students, start your own companies where you have majority shareholding while the college gets a minority stake”, he said during a keynote address at the graduation ceremony. He added, “Apply the knowledge and skills you learnt at this college and be at the forefront of the battle to change lives in our country”.
Zimbabwean Graduates
Murwira’s address also touched on the key role that Zimbabwean graduates could play in developing their country’s resources through entrepreneurial ventures. For example, eight students from the applied chemical technology programme have been assisted in establishing a detergent manufacturing company.
Education 5.0 is designed to help universities and colleges support graduates become job-creators by encouraging them to use new digital technologies and innovation in production.

The ceremony in Bulawayo saw students graduating as a result of Education 5.0. These programmes are based on skills requested by the local and national economy to enable the country to industrialise and boost economic growth.
Local Partnerships
The government aims to create new jobs through partnerships with industry and local entrepreneurs. The named initiative has come as a challenge to the graduates to improve industries in Zimbabwe.
Over 2,421 graduates received their degrees from Bulawayo Polytechnic College in various fields. Zimbabwe has an unemployment rate of around 90%, worsened by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Therefore, the education minister’s plan is designed to utilise technological and environmental developments to stimulate trade and lower the unemployment rate in the country.
