Zimbabwe’s Disability Sports Association Advances SDGs
Zimbabwe Sports Association for People Living with Disabilities and Federation of Disabled People in Zimbabwe, is actively working to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote inclusivity and empowerment for people living with disabilities.
Johane Marufu, a representative from the association, spoke about their efforts during an interview with the media on the sideline of a validation workshop program for the 2024 Voluntary National Review held at Impala Lodge on 8 April.
Marufu emphasised the importance of the association’s participation in the validation process, as they aim to redefine the perception of disabilities in society.
Disability Advocacy
“So, we are here to participate at this Voluntary National Review (VNR) validation process, representing the interests of people with disabilities. We know that there are 52 indicators of the SDGs that have something to do with people with disabilities,” Marufu said.
Marufu indicated that the association aims to provide their insights and ensure that no one is left behind in the pursuit of the SDGs.
He stated, “So we are here to also put our inputs to VNR so that no one is left behind and learn from others how they are doing it.”
Module Alignment
One crucial aspect Marufu mentioned was the use of disability modules by various stakeholders. He explained there are different modules, including charity, medical, and religious, that shape the understanding of disabilities. The association seeks to align these modules to provide a comprehensive perspective on disability issues.
Marufu also stressed the importance of economic empowerment for people with disabilities, urging for more focus on activities that promote economic growth and entrepreneurship.
Enhancing Economic Empowerment
Highlighting the four clusters of focus, including social, economic, traditional, and governance, Marufu expressed concern about the limited attention given to the economic cluster in relation to people with disabilities. He emphasised the need for initiatives that contribute to economic empowerment, ensuring individuals with disabilities can take care of themselves and not solely rely on social assistance.
During the interview, Marufu acknowledged the ongoing process of gathering information and reviewing disability practices. While they are still in the preview stage, he mentioned the dominance of the charity lens in perceiving disabilities, often only granting basic aids such as wheelchairs and crutches. He stressed the importance of addressing other key aspects, such as economic empowerment and governance, to achieve justice and equality for people with disabilities.
Collaborative SDG Progress
The Zimbabwe Sports Association for People Living with Disabilities, along with various ministries, public organisations, and civil society organisations, are actively working towards the SDGs. Marufu emphasised that every action taken contributes in some way to achieving one or more of these goals.
In closing, Marufu highlighted the need for collaboration among different sectors, including churches, major industries, and community-based organisations, to promote inclusivity and work towards a society where people with disabilities can lead fulfilling lives. As the association strives towards the achievement of the SDGs, their efforts serve as a reminder that disabilities should not be a barrier to reaching one’s full potential.
