Residents Plight
Bulawayo residents are bearing the brunt of the city’s water crisis, with many expressing their frustration and concern to Bulawayo City Council (BCC). The long queues at community boreholes are a significant source of distress for residents, who are forced to spend over six hours a day waiting to access water. Pregnant women, in particular, are finding it challenging to obtain water due to the long queues. Despite the community’s pleas for help, more needs to be done to address the water crisis.
Climate Change
Climate change is a significant contributor to Bulawayo’s water crisis. The region is experiencing longer and more frequent droughts, which have significantly reduced the amount of water available in the city’s dams and reservoirs. Higher temperatures have also led to increased evaporation rates, further decreasing water levels. Changes in precipitation patterns have further worsened the situation, with less rainfall occurring during the wet season, resulting in a severe impact on the city’s water resources. Without adequate rainfall, the city’s water crisis is likely to persist, and residents may face even more severe water shortages in the future.
Lack of response
Despite Bulawayo’s water crisis being a significant issue, authorities have been slow to respond adequately. Zimbabwe is highly ranked in the 2021 Global Climate Risk Index, with projections indicating that the country will continue to warm through 2080. The western and southern provinces of the country, including Matabeleland North and South, and Masvingo, are expected to experience the most significant warming.
Despite this, authorities have been slow to implement measures to mitigate the impact of climate change and address the water crisis. This has resulted in devastating effects on the community, including children, with the destruction of schools, health care facilities, and other vital infrastructure.
