Nyamande Government Primary School Blighted by Drug Abuse: Police Investigating the Case of a Drunken Learner
Bulawayo police have launched an investigation into the matter of a video depicting a drunken learner at Nyamande Government Primary School in Old Lobengula which has gone viral on social media platforms.
Furthermore, Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed that they are striving to identify the learner and arrest the alleged drug peddler referred to in the video.
“Following the video which had gone viral and appeared to have been recorded in a classroom or school office set up, police instituted investigations,” said Inspector Ncube.
He added, “The school was identified and efforts to arrest the drug peddler are still under way. It was established however that the learner had stolen ZAR20 from his grandmother which he used to buy a 375mls bottle of explorer hot stuff which he went on to dilute with a 500mls fizzy drink.”
The police spokesperson further revealed that the boy took the alcohol in the class during lessons after telling the teacher or asking for permission to do so as he claimed his throat was running dry. That is how he got drunk.
In response to this distressing incident, Inspector Ncube stated that police are therefore making some efforts to establish the person who recorded the video.

Stop Taking Videos of Vulnerable People
He also urged authorities, teachers, parents and or guardians including members of the public to desist from taking video of vulnerable people or those in distress and sending them as that is an offence.
“In this case, people were supposed to protect the child and carry remedial measures which include but are not limited to calling parents, police and other stakeholders,” Inspector Ncube advised.
Last month, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) launched a two-week drug awareness campaign in secondary schools across Matabeleland South Province. The campaign is aimed at fighting drug and substance abuse which has become prevalent in schools.
Moreover, statistics released by the Police indicate that cases of drug and substance abuse recorded in Matabeleland South province rose by 172 percent from January to April this year, compared to the same period last year.
National Youth Day
During National Youth Day commemorations on 21 February, President Emmerson Mnangagwa launched a National Anti-Drug and Substance Abuse Campaign.
He also issued a stern warning to drug producers, peddlers and abusers, saying that the long arm of the law will soon catch up with them. The government also declared drug and substance abuse a national disaster.
Lastly, President Emmerson Mnangagwa also revealed in April this year that government availed $500 million under the drug and substance abuse mitigation fund as part of efforts by the Second Republic to speed up high-impact activities in the fight against the drug menace.
