Two Illegal miners killed in a suspectedly mine shaft collaps
Two illegal miners died on Tuesday unexpectedly due to mine shaft collapse after going down the shaft to check water levels for them to start working.
Bulawayo Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and said that the deceased were identified as Thompson Sibanda and Colleen Manyathela who died at Master Cecil Mine are both from Nkayi.
Insp Ncube said, “The two deceased persons went down the mine shaft which is almost 20 metres deep at around 1000 hours to check the water level in order for them to start working. The two did not return until 1300 hours.”

He added, “On the same day at around 1315 hours, their co-worker a male adult aged 31 years, of Cowdray Park Bulawayo suspected that something might have happened underground since his colleagues took a long time to come out. He then mobilised a rescue team to go underground. They managed to retrieve Thompson Sibanda at around 2300 hours whilst Colleen Manyathela was retrieved on the following day.”
Police suspect that the two deceased persons might have disturbed the pillars which supported the shaft and the shaft collapsed. They had bruises all over their bodies.
In light of this incident, Insp Ncube said, “We warn members of the public against illegal mining as this endangers their lives. It is not only an offence to engage in illegal mining but has more risk than prospects of getting rich.”
Appeal for Assistance
Meanwhile, in a shock of events Bulawayo police discovered two human legs in an advanced decomposing state stashed in a sack which were dumped at an illegal dumpsite on 8 January.
Deputy Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector, Nomalanga Msebele said, “Bulawayo Police appeals for information that may assist in the body identification of two human legs which were recovered stashed in a grey sack, dumped at an illegal dump site under a small bushy tree near Good Hope secondary school in Pumula South Bulawayo on the 8th 0f October 2023 at around 1600 hours.”
She added that the legs resemble an adult and the estimated shoe size is six or seven.
