Minister of Primary and Secondary Education raises concerns over illegal schools in Bulawayo and Harare
The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerai Moyo revealed the proliferation of illegal private schools in the country especially in Bulawayo and Harare citing the need for the Ministry to regulate the sector.
The Minister raised the issue after touring and addressing school heads at St Columbas High School on 25 January and addressed school heads from the province. The visit was part of the Ministry’s efforts to ensure that schools are providing quality education to learners.
He said, “There’s been a proliferation of illegal schools. We can’t watch people operating schools illegally. We are the regulator, and if you want us to establish your school to be registered, there must be a significant time when we are going to come and regulate it.”
Illegal Schools
“Here in Bulawayo and Harare That’s where we find the largest number of illegal schools operating,” he added.
The Minister also emphasised the importance of ensuring that learners have access to quality education.
He highlighted, “How do we ensure that this quality education in your school? You find learners mushroomed in a very small room, 20 learners in a small room that can only cater for two students?”
The Minister pointed out that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is the one responsible for regulating the education sector in Zimbabwe.
Misled
The Minister cited an example of an owner of a certain school who collected examination fees from learners but did not register them for examinations.
He said, “One owner of a certain school in Harare collected examination fees for his learner’s to register for them for examinations but he did not because the school is not registered. There is no examination centre and instead of negotiating with the real schools, he put the money in his pocket and the lenders did not write exams.”
He mentioned that the Ministry is committed to regulating the education sector and ensuring that learners have access to quality education.
