Trio Arrested for Copper Cable Theft Allegations & One at Large.
Police in Bulawayo have arrested three suspects in connection with the theft of copper cables amidst power crisis in the country.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the apprehension of Senzeni Moyo (34), Thembani Ngwenya (27), and Louis Ngwenya (25) after being found in possession of a sack containing approximately 16kgs of copper cables on the 07th of February 2024.
He said, “On the 07th of February 2024 at around 1840 hours, police officers from Bulawayo Central received a tip off that there was a silver Honda Fit carrying some copper cables at Mazai Bridge located along 4th Avenue Extension, Bulawayo.”
The Tip Off
“Police acted on the tip off and proceeded to the scene where they spotted the Honda Fit being driven along 4th Avenue into the Central Business District and followed behind the motor vehicle,” Inspector Ncube added.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officers identified themselves and instructed the driver, Thembani Ngwenya, to open the rear passenger door. One of the accused persons attempted to flee the scene but was unsuccessful. A search of the vehicle uncovered a sack containing the stolen copper cables in the boot, leading to the arrest of the three individuals.
Inspector Ncube emphasised the seriousness of cable theft and warned against those engaging in such criminal activities.
He stated, “Those people who vandalise ZETDC cables, those who think of doing so and those who are buyers should seriously consider trying other legal business avenues as the long arm of the law is now hovering over their heads.”
Community Cooperation
Inspector Abednico also highlighted the importance of community cooperation in combating crime, thanking the public for their assistance in this case.
Meanwhile, the police are appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining accused person, who managed to evade capture, to come forward and report to the nearest police station. The investigation into the theft of copper cables is ongoing, and the authorities are working diligently to bring those responsible to justice.
