BVTA Joins Global Commemoration of International Workers Day, Advocating for Safety and Health in a Changing Climate
Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association (BVTA) has called recognition of rights and welfare of informal economy workers, who make up a significant portion of Zimbabwe’s workforce and economy. The association works tirelessly to ensure that these workers are treated with dignity and have access to essential social services.
Under the theme “Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate,” BVTA is highlighting the crucial contributions of informal economy workers and the need to address challenges faced by informal economy workers in areas such as healthcare, housing, and safe working spaces.
Health Support
Healthcare remains a pressing concern for many informal economy workers who lack access to basic medical care and pension plans.
According to a BVTA press statement, “We believe that every worker deserves access to quality healthcare without being burdened by exorbitant costs. Our medical aid plans provide a practical solution to this pressing issue.”
BVTA is encouraging these workers to consider affordable medical aid options offered by the association. Premiums for these plans start as low as $5, ensuring essential health coverage and financial security for the future.
Housing Advocacy
Securing decent housing has been a significant challenge for informal economy workers. To address this issue, BVTA is urging banks and other stakeholders to establish affordable housing programs specifically designed for these workers.
Financial institutions, such as NBS, have expressed interest in supporting these efforts. BVTA is calling on them to expedite the creation of suitable housing schemes tailored to the unique needs of the informal economy workforce.
Infrastructure Collaboration
Ensuring safe and decent working spaces is crucial for the well-being of informal economy workers. BVTA is inviting associations, local authorities, and other partners to collaborate on building and maintaining proper infrastructure and conducive working environments. The organisation points to the success of the Nkulumane project as an exemplary model for promoting safe working conditions.
“We have seen the positive impact of providing safe spaces for these workers. It not only enhances their productivity but also safeguards their physical well-being,” read BVTA statement.
Worker Advocacy
The mission of BVTA is to advocate for the rights and welfare of informal economy workers, who make up a significant portion of Zimbabwe’s workforce. The association works tirelessly to ensure that these workers are treated with dignity and have access to essential social services.
As International Workers Day is celebrated, BVTA is encouraging the public to support their cause and stand in solidarity with informal economy workers. By addressing the challenges they face in healthcare, housing, and safe working spaces, BVTA aims to empower these workers and foster a more inclusive and equitable society.
