Bulawayo Residents Help Police Arrest Two Suspects in Copper Cable Theft
Police in Bulawayo have arrested two men accused of stealing copper cables from street lights in the city’s Hillside suburb after local residents confronted the suspects and helped police apprehend them.
According to a press statement from the Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Ncube Abednico, the incident occurred on June 1st around 1:00 pm. Residents in the Hillside area saw Ephraim Mbewe (40) and Leeroy Manyora (27) damaging street lights and cutting copper wires.
“The residents confronted them, they ran away and they started chasing them,” Inspector Ncube said.
The Capture
He added, “They managed to apprehend Leeroy Manyora and he was taken to Hillside police station.”
The arrested suspect, Leeroy Manyora, then admitted to committing the crime with his friend Ephraim Mbewe. Police conducted a raid and were able to arrest Mbewe as well.
“Police would like to thank the community for working together in fighting crime in their area and also encourage other suburbs to do the same whenever such incidents befall them,” Inspector Abednico stated.
Cable Theft
This latest incident highlights the growing problem of copper cable theft that has plagued Bulawayo and other parts of Zimbabwe in recent years. Copper cables are frequently targeted by thieves who then sell the stolen goods on the black market.
“Copper cable theft has become a major issue, not just in Bulawayo but across the country,” said local resident Mary Moyo. “It’s so frustrating when the streetlights don’t work because criminals have stolen the cables. I’m glad the police were able to catch these suspects with the help of the community.”
The two accused men, Ephraim Mbewe and Leeroy Manyora, are now in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to the theft of the copper cables.
Vigilance & Cooperation
Inspector Ncube applauded the vigilance and cooperation of the Hillside residents, saying their actions played a crucial role in the arrests.
“This just shows what can be achieved when the community works hand-in-hand with the police,” he said. “We encourage all Bulawayo residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately.”
The successful arrest of the two suspects has provided a glimmer of hope in the ongoing battle against copper cable theft in the city.
