Lymon Tanaka Moyo Empowers Bulawayo Youth Through Dance and Creativity
Lymon Tanaka Moyo is changing lives in his hometown of Bulawayo with his dance group, Lixion Dance Group. At the age of 29, Moyo has successfully brought together 30 participants from Emganwini, Mzilikazi, and Entumbane under one roof to provide a platform where they can showcase their artistic talents.
Moyo, who graduated from Midlands State University in 2021 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Film and Theatre Arts, shared that his experience as a music recording artist for seven years sparked his desire to empower young people in his community through the arts.
Performance Arts
He said, “During my degree program, I did my attachment at Lobengula Primary, where I was teaching fourth graders Visual and Performing Arts. This is where I got the idea of becoming a dance group administrator.”
The Lixion Dance Group operates from Mzilikazi Youth Center, where they have implemented a program that keeps the youth engaged and off the streets for at least five days a week. The group has also established a garden where every participant grows their vegetables, which they take home for food. They distribute the surplus to the elderly.

The group has faced some challenges, including disciplinary issues from some participants and transport problems for those based in other parts of the town. However, most have stayed on, cultivating strong relationships with fellow members and parents, creating a bond of support that has remained strong over time.
Discipline Through Dance
The Lixion Dance Group has already made waves at the Sanganai Expo, where they shared the stage with South African musicians Big Zulu and the late Costa Titch. In 2023, they became semi-finalists of the nationwide Dreamstar Talent Search.
Moyo highlights the importance of dance in fostering discipline, teamwork, and perseverance among the young people.
He said, “Dance is a game-changer, a universal language that bridges cultures, and creates positive interactions in the community. In dance, we emphasize teamwork, and we do this same when doing our gardening and life skills lessons. We make samoosas and sell them on the streets of Mzilikazi to fundraise for any activity. By doing this, we are fostering living and working together.”
Arts School
Moyo’s dream is to turn Lixion Dance Group into a formal Art School to help cover the damages suffered in the arts industry in Bulawayo in the near future.
He is confident that perseverance and professionalism are key. “Remain humble and try to maintain professional conduct at all times,” he advised.
Lymon Tanaka Moyo is setting an excellent example for the youth of Bulawayo. By empowering them through dance and the arts, he is creating opportunities for them to genuinely care about themselves and their communities. He and his team are determined to effect change and transform the lives of those in their hometown through their innovative approach to dance and creativity.
