‘Be Competitive And Offer Unique Products’ Zimtrade CEO Advises Exporters
Zimbabwean companies have been urged to be competitive and offer unique selling propositions in order to increase exports and stand out in the highly competitive DRC market. This was revealed by the Zimtrade Chief Executive Officer, Allan Majuru, during an interview at the Agriculture show.
Majuru revealed that the partnership between Zimbabwe and DRC is crucial for the future market as they are both African countries with a lot of potential for growth and expansion of trade. The two countries have already established a working relationship and have been exporting various products to each other.
Majuru said, “The bottom line is our commodity, need to value add so if we do that it’s going to change, even the Ministry of Mines I think put in place minerals that are focused on making sure that there are really doing this beneficiation.”
This means that Zimbabwe has to focus on producing quality products at low cost to increase competitiveness and benefit from the trade partnership with DRC.
Comparative Advantage
Furthermore, Majuru highlighted that Zimbabwe has several unique selling propositions that could give them a competitive advantage in the DRC market. For instance, the country has good supply windows to various markets, geographical conditions that enable the production of unique products such as blueberries, and good weather conditions for certain crops.
Majuru also pointed out that “After COVID, people will become more health-conscious. And us, we are a nutrition country and we are now driving organic farming in organic agriculture.”
This means that Zimbabwe could benefit from the increased demand for organic products and become a major player in the market.
Higher Prices
One example is the organic pineapples being exported to the Netherlands, which were previously sold conventionally. Through organic farming, the farmers were able to sell the same product at a higher price, uplifting the rural communities’ livelihoods.
Zimbabwe Avocado exports rose to 38 percent. Avocado export volumes surged 38 percent that is in January to June 2023 Zimbabwe exported 4.5 million kgs. whereas in January to June in 2022 Zimbabwe exported 3 million kgs. Zimbabwe exports both fresh avocados and dried.
Zimbabwean companies have been encouraged to focus on producing quality products, at low cost while incorporating unique selling points to increase competitiveness and benefit from the trade partnership with DRC.
Lastly, the partnership between Zimbabwe and DRC has the potential for growth and expansion of trade. Thus, Zimbabwean companies must be competitive and offer products that stand out in the highly competitive DRC market.
