15 Cars Burnt Beyond Repair in Bulawayo Garage Fire
Another fire has rocked Bulawayo, this time at a garage in Mzilikazi suburb, where 15 cars were burnt beyond repair. This incident comes barely a week after a market, Mutize Flea Market, was razed down, and a fuel tanker exploded in Kelvin North.
Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and said it is suspected that the cause of fire was from burning garbage at a dump site outside the perimeter fence and the fire then spread to the garage.
“Circumstances are that on the 6th of September 2023 at around 0230 hours, a private security guard employed by the garage was doing perimeter checks inside the garage when he noticed some smoke coming from underneath one of the cars which were parked, ” said Inspector Ncube.

He further revealed, “He went closer to check and discovered that the parked car had caught fire. He tried to extinguish the fire using water buckets and sand with the help of other neighbours but without success.”
Uncontrolled Ignition
As people failed to extinguish the fire, the burning car ignited other 15 nearby parked motor vehicles which were brought for spray painting, repairs and other general services. The fire also damaged ZESA overhead copper cables which pass over the garage. Fire Brigade was summoned and extinguished the fire.
Commenting on this incident, the spokesperson urged members of the public to have fire precaution measures which include but not limited to clearing nearby bush, have proper fire guard and to remove litter that may lead fire into buildings.
He added, “Also to make sure that all electrical appliances are switched off before leaving the house or retire to bed and before close of business at work places. Members are encouraged to report fire incidents as early as possible.”

This is not the first time that Bulawayo has experienced fire incidents. Last week, Mutize Flea Market was gutted, causing losses worth millions of dollars, while a fuel tanker exploded in Kelvin North days later. These three recent fires have left residents tongue-tied as they are wondering the causes of these fires.
