Bulawayo men caught red handed slaughtering stolen cows.
Bulawayo police have arrested three men in relation to a recent stock theft case after they were caught red handed slaughtering two cows belonging to Maheba Village residents in Solusi.
Acting Bulawayo Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the arrest of Fanuel Makondo (35) from New Lobengula, Mandlenkosi Sibanda (30) from Old Pumula and Tawanda Moyo (27) from Nkulumane 12.
“On June 23, 2023, around 7pm, the accused persons who were driving a blue Honda Fit vehicle, went to Maheba village, Fig Tree, and set three wire snares in the bush. Then they drove the herd of cattle into the snares, trapped and slaughtered two cows which belonged to two complainants in Maheba Village,” said Assistant Inspector Msebele.
Then a 44-year-old man passing by the scene spotted the accused persons loading the carcasses into their motor vehicle and alerted his neighbors. Together, they managed to apprehend accused Tawanda Moyo, while the other two accused persons managed to escape with some of the meat.
The Tip-off
Moreover, a police report was made, and on June 28, 2023, police received a tip-off that the two accused persons were at Iminyela Shops, Mpopoma Bulawayo. Police reacted to the tip-off and managed to arrest the two accused persons.
“We commend the good work exhibited by members of the public for assisting the police to apprehend the accused persons. We encourage the Bulawayo community to continue working hand in glove with the police in fighting crime,” said Assistant Inspector Msebele.
She added, “We, therefore, urge the community to report any person known or believed to be selling meat in houses. They should also not buy uninspected meat as that is not only a crime but unsafe.”
Keeping Stock
In a bid to combat stock theft, police are urging residents to adopt measures such as marking their animals, reporting suspicious activity, and practicing good animal husbandry.
“It’s important for residents to work with us in combating stock theft. We are adopting measures to prevent these crimes from happening and encourage residents to do the same,” said Acting Police Spokesperson.
Lastly, the accused persons have been charged with stock theft and are currently in police custody. They will appear in court soon.
