Bulawayo Water Crisis: Government Actions Needed Urgently
Bulawayo City Council authorities have pleaded with the government to declare Bulawayo a water shortage area so that they acquire 14 Billion United States Dollars required to alleviate the water crisis.
Addressing stakeholders during water indaba held on 14 March at Bulawayo Club organised by Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) while representing the Mayor, David Coltart, Ward 3 Councillor Mxolisi Mahlangu revealed that the city can only get funders to solve water crisis after being declared a water shortage area.
Funding Required
“The city needs a total of US $14 billion to carry out all the programs that we think can solve the water crisis,” he stated.
He added, “For us to get funding the government should declare the City of Bulawayo a water crisis City.”
National University of Science and Technology Lecturer, Dr Lerato Nare believes that there is lack of investment in water infrastructure in the city which is worsening the crisis.
Water Challenges for Schools
Meanwhile, Lupane State University lecturer, Dr Keith Phiri revealed a dehumanising situation at schools in Bulawayo due to the ongoing water crisis.
Presenting the findings of the research he did on water challenges at schools, Dr Phiri said that there is an unpleasant experience in schools which is forcing children to use un-flushed toilets or resort to suppression methods to avoid going to the toilet.
Urgent Action
He went on to call for urgent action before cholera and diarrhoea strikes at schools.
According to Mayor Coltart, Bulawayo needs $14 million to address water issues, including dam rehabilitation, alternative water sources, and infrastructure security.
Last week, Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Winston Chitando said the government is committed to supporting the Bulawayo City Council’s (BCC) bid to raise $14 million to address water issues urgently.
