Government’s Efforts to Address Bulawayo’s Water Woes
Government’s allocation of $7 billion to the city of Bulawayo for repairs and purchasing of essential materials in the water supply chain is a welcome move.
According to Herald the funds will be used to repair broken-down boreholes at the Nyamandlovu Aquifer, rehabilitate the city’s pump stations and leaking pipes, and boost infrastructure in the rehabilitation of water sources such as boreholes. These measures are part of short to medium-term interventions to address the city’s persistent water woes.
Gwayi-Shangani Dam
Presenting during the Bulawayo Metropolitan Provincial Development Committee held on 1 February, Bulawayo Thematic Chairperson for government, devolution and development revealed that the government aims at completing the Gwayi-Shangani Dam project.
This project, which is 85 percent complete, is a top priority for the government and it seeks to address water challenges in the city. The dam is a major component of the National Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project and is expected to provide a permanent water solution for Bulawayo and the Matabeleland region.
The government’s commitment to addressing the water crisis in Bulawayo is commendable. However, it is important to ensure that the funds are utilised effectively and efficiently. The government should prioritise transparency and accountability in the allocation and utilisation of the funds.
Kept Informed
The public should be kept informed of the progress made in the rehabilitation of the water infrastructure and the completion of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam. The government should also engage with stakeholders and committees responsible for overseeing the rehabilitation of the water infrastructure to ensure that the interventions are sustainable and effective.
In conclusion, the government’s allocation of $7 billion to the city of Bulawayo for repairs and purchasing of essential materials in the water supply chain is a positive step towards addressing the city’s water crisis. The completion of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam is also a top priority for the government.
