Minor Raped and Robbed in Pumula South by an Intruder
A 17-year-old girl in Pumula South, Bulawayo, whose name has been withheld for privacy reasons, was raped and robbed in her own home by an intruder.
According to Acting Bulawayo Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele the incident occurred at around 4:30 am on 9 July when the victim was awoken by footsteps in her house. She discovered an intruder, armed with a knife and a half brick, walking inside her home. The victim tried to scream but was threatened by the intruder.
Demanding Cash
Assistant Inspector Msebele said, “The accused person then demanded some cash, but the complainant did not have any. He then ordered her to remove all her clothes and raped her once without protection. After the rape, the accused person took her itel cellphone and jumped out through the window. A police report was made.”

The victim was taken to hospital, where she received treatment for her rape-related injuries. In response to this horrific crime, the police are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the arrest of the accused person.
Meanwhile, Msebele advises members of the public to improve their safety, saying, “Members of the public are advised to use target hardening techniques. Install window and door burglar bars.”
Rising Rates of Sexual Assaults
Zimbabwe has been facing a rising number of sexual assault cases. According to the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC), at least 22 women are raped daily in Zimbabwe, which equates to one rape taking place per 75 minutes, with an average of 646 women being sexually assaulted each month.
Rape and sexual assault are not only violations of human rights, but they also cause long-lasting trauma to victims. It is imperative for both the public and law enforcement agencies to work together to combat this scourge on society.
