Two Men Arrested for Murder in Bulawayo
Bulawayo police have arrested two men in connection with two separate murder cases that occurred in the city in the past two months.
Bongani Sibanda (31) of New Magwegwe, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing Msilisi Magutshwa (39) of Makokoba, who died of head injuries after being assaulted at a football match on September 3.
Mzukhona Ngwenya (35) of Gwabalanda, was arrested on October 31 for allegedly striking his younger brother Mbongeni Ngwenya (24) with an iron bar on the head, following a drunken argument. Mbongeni died of his injuries on November 12.
Bulawayo Man Attacked Rescuing Friend from Assault
According to Bulawayo Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube, Magutshwa was attacked by Sibanda and his accomplices after he tried to rescue his friend who was being whipped with a sjamboko by Sibanda for pushing him.
“Police confirms the arrest of Bongani Sibanda a male adult aged 31years of New Magwegwe Bulawayo in connection with a murder case of Msilisi Magutshwa a male adult aged 39 of Makokoba Bulawayo,” said Inspector Ncube.
He added, “On the 3rd of September 2023, the now deceased was at Barbour fields stadium watching a football match with his friends. One of his friend was assaulted with a sjamboko for pushing the accused person. The now deceased who was trying to rescue his friend was also assaulted severely and he sustained a swollen face.”
Hospital Admission
Magutshwa sustained a swollen face and was taken to Mpilo Hospital on September 5, where he was admitted and complained of a severe headache. He passed away on September 13 at around 10:20 pm. A post mortem revealed that he died of assault and head injuries.
Sibanda was arrested on November 13 after police received a tip-off that he was at Mzilikazi Rank trying to board a bus to Nkayi. He confessed to assaulting Magutshwa and his friend, and implicated nine other suspects who are still on the run.
In the other case, Ngwenya hit his brother with an iron bar once on the left side of the head after they came home drunk from a beer drink and had a misunderstanding. Mbongeni fell down and became unconscious. He had a cut above the left ear and was taken to Mpilo Hospital where he was treated and discharged on the same day as his condition was stable.
His Condition Worsened
However, his condition worsened and he was referred back to Mpilo Hospital on November 12, where he died at around 6 pm. The cause of death was also due to assault and head injuries.
Ngwenya, who was initially charged with physical abuse, is now facing a murder charge. In light of these incidents, Inspector Ncube urged the public not to take the law into their own hands as this results in unnecessary loss of lives.
“We urge members of the public not to take Law into their own hands as this results in unnecessary loss of lives. We also appeal to members of the public with information that may lead to the arrest of the outstanding accused persons to come forward,” said the spokesperson.
