Ex-convict arrested for vehicle theft in Bulawayo.
A 32-year-old ex-convict recently released on Presidential Amnesty has been arrested in Bulawayo for alleged theft of two motor vehicles, a similar crime he had partly served since 2016.
Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed this in a press statement and said that the accused person, Tevnet Ncube from Ratanyana village chief Nyamazonke in Kezi was apprehended following a tip-off to police that a Honda Fit vehicle, which had been stolen, was spotted at Mapisa.
“Upon receiving the information, our CID vehicle theft squad acted swiftly with the ZRP Kezi and arrested the said accused person. During interrogation, he confessed to stealing another Honda Fit vehicle with registration number AFS 1944 on 28th July 2023, which had been parked at a residential place in Bulawayo,” said Inspector Abednico Ncube.
Vehicle Left Running
The spokesperson added that the current owner of the Honda fit vehicle had parked it with its engine running outside their residence in Nkulumane area of Bulawayo on 9th August 2023, when the accused person stole it and several household items, including a 32-inch plasma TV.
“The arrest of this accused person led to the recovery of the first Honda Fit, which he had fixed with different number plates AEN 6371. We also found the current plates in the boot of the stolen vehicle. The second Honda Fit, which was at Mapisa, was later recovered with all the property stolen from the victims,” he added.
It has also emerged that the accused person had previously served 14 years in jail for a similar motor vehicle theft case in 2016.

“The accused person was only released from jail recently on Presidential Amnesty, but as it appears, he has not been reformed and has resumed his criminal activities.”
In light of this incident Inspector Ncube appreciated the public’s cooperation in fighting against crime.

However, he advised motorists saying, “Motorists are advised not to leave the keys in the motor vehicles and the ignition or the engine running.”
Meanwhile, theft of vehicles in Zimbabwe is now rampant. In March this year, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) expressed concern over cases of cars being stolen mostly at car parks.
Lastly, the accused person is expected to appear in court facing charges of two counts of motor vehicle theft.
