Women Activists in Bulawayo Call for Stricter Enforcement of Laws and Policies to Protect Women
Women activists in Bulawayo attribute unreported high cases of gender-based violence to societal stigma and lack of sensitivity from law enforcement officials.
In an exclusive interview with a prominent women activist and ordained Pastor, Sukoluhle Ndlovu, she shared her insights on the most crucial challenges for women in Bulawayo leading them not to report gender-based violence cases.
Ndlovu said, “A distressing issue plaguing Bulawayo is the alarmingly high rates of physical and sexual abuse, as well as emotional violence against women.”
“Currently, many cases go unreported due to societal stigma and a lack of sensitivity from law enforcement officials,” she added.
Ndlovu called for a change in the existing framework, urging for stricter enforcement of laws and policies that protect women. She urged more women’s participation in policing to create an environment where victims feel safe and heard.
Street Entrepreneurship
Ndlovu, who has been actively involved in raising awareness about gender-based violence since 2010, also blamed the economic insecurities faced by women in Bulawayo as one of the primary issues.
“Many women are struggling to secure stable employment and are resorting to selling goods on the streets to make ends meet. This leads them not to report abuse cases as they depend on the perpetrator,” said Ndlovu.
To reduce physical and sexual violence, Ndlovu emphasised the importance of open and inclusive educational programs. She suggested integrating parents into these programs to facilitate open conversations with their children, educating them about respectful relationships and consent from an early age.
She stated, “By empowering children and dismantling harmful gender norms, long-term cultural change can be achieved.”
When discussing the role of men in ending gender-based violence, Ndlovu stressed the significance of including men in the conversation as allies and agents of change. She highlighted the need for workshops and programs that reinforce balanced gender roles and promote a culture of equality.
Engaging Men
“By engaging men and building their understanding, gender-based violence can be tackled holistically,” Ndlovu suggested.
Regarding the controversial topic of lobola (bride price) which was recently reported as optional, Ndlovu encouraged further conversations around reforming the practice to ensure that it aligns with modern notions of equality and respect.
Ndlovu also acknowledged that while it has historical significance in connecting families, its economic ramifications can contribute to gender-based violence.
“By compromising a woman’s freedom and holding her accountable for negative events within the marriage, lobola perpetuates imbalances in power dynamics,” said Pastor Ndlovu.
Increased Education
In line with 16 days of Activism against gender-based violence, Ndlovu called for increased educational campaigns and awareness programs. She highlighted the importance of community involvement, particularly in rural areas where harmful gender norms may still prevail.
She suggested, “One-on-one conversations, grassroots initiatives, and accessible resources are essential in eradicating gender-based violence at the root level.”
Ndlovu emphasized the need for collective efforts and increased awareness in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, emphasising the need for sustained commitment to create a more equitable society.
